I am going through an intense and challenging period, and I find myself in a situation where I just have to keep going. I've learned that challenging times are the best opportunity to try new tools and strategies.

Here is where the Focus tools come in. Focus is the University of Oxford's continuous improvement and change team. And they have a set of tools designed to work in highly complex settings, and that can help anyone to improve.

One of these tools is the After Action Review (AAR). I just put it to a test and had some "aha" moments that felt magical.

Here's how I did it: I chose the situation in my life that is taking most of my mental energy. I reflected on what went well and why. Then, I reflected on what could be better. To finish, I decided on the best action to take to improve it.

I wrote the first thing that came to mind, and then edited out the emotions that were tinting the facts, helping me to see things as they are. Thanks to this, I now feel a sense of empowerment that I can't describe!

Here's a sneak peak of the final result of my reflection:

What went well: I live in the place I dreamed of and love.

Why it went well: Because I took the opportunity that life gave me, and never gave up in the process, even when I was really scared.

What could be better: I secure a higher-level role that ensures my visa sponsorship renewal.

How could these things be better: I've found the perfect role, one that aligns with my experience and passion. I am thoroughly preparing for my application and interview.

This exercise reminded me of how much power I have over my own life and destiny. I hope it has the same effect for you.

Caro.
